Most of the top seven teams took a hit in their ranking points this week. This included sizable drops for the Cats, the Blues, the Pies and the Saints, meaning that Carlton couldn't grab the number one slot.

6 (6) St. Kilda 14.7 (20.4)
7 (7) North Melbourne 11.8 (13.4)

these rankings are bullshit. essendon started the year ahead of richmond, have won every game, yet are now behind them despite richmond winning just one?? dont quit your day job mate
Nice one 'Anonymous'... Just beating Nth, and wins over Port and the Schoolies doesn't boost your ratings much.
You don't get credability for beating up on the little kids.
Strength of opposition matters. Essendon has had one very good result this year in beating Carlton, one pretty good result in beating Nth, and unimpressive wins against Port and Gold Coast. Richmond have only had one win this year, but have faced tougher opposition overall. Except the Carlton match all their results have been good, even if it hasn't been reflected in the win column. Of course this depends on the assumption that Collingwood and Geelong are still good teams.
The other factor that is working in Richmond's favour is that some of their bad results from 2011 are now starting to drop out of the rankings, whereas Essendon had more heavy losses in the second half of the season.
